Thanks for your thoughts, I too am a pastor and recently resigned my position as youth pastor after a 9 year and 6 1/2 year assignment in two different congregations. I am in the process of moving back to my vocation as a contractor which I left behind nearly 16 years ago to follow God's call to full-time ministry. I still believe I am following God's call but not seeing it the same way I did so many years ago. The reason I am reading and responding is because I am sensing God’s leading away from the traditional model of pastor to a more inclusive way of seeing ministry (i.e. the priesthood of all believers). My search has brought me to the place where I am asking, how biblical is our concept of pastor as portrayed in the North American church today? Thanks again for your thoughts.

Hi, Dennis. I understand your point. But I think the response in these kinds of churches is a reaction to past experiences with other pastors. The church developed a mechanism to deal with problem pastors. The church developed their opinions about their roles without due regard for Scripture, because of previous poor leadership. The kinds of reactions you described don't happen in a vacuum. Once systems are broken, it is always much more complicated and troublesome to repair or restart the systems.

Blessings!

I do agree with your burden here, especially with famous pastors. But I also see another problem: When pastors see the need for change in legacy churches, they often have too LITTLE power, because the board may lay expectations and resist their attempts to lead the church toward more organic principles. This is something I've had reported on a number of occasions.

David,
Thanks for your thoughts on this critical issue. I expect that you may catch some heat for them, but they are true and need to be heard. Jesus warned of "hirelings" - we should make sure that we don't fall into that mindset ourselves and that we teach the church how to recognize those who "would be the greatest" but don't have the hearts of servants.
