Hi, Darryl. In my experience in Christianized and other Western nations, I have found that most nominal Christians do not have a good background in Scripture. The Discovery Bible Study Meeting is also more than just a Bible study. It establishes basic core values for a church and how to replicate a church. The bottom line is that any method we use should be easily reproduced and result in church. Go for whatever works. There is no one way, but some ways are better. Test yours. Test mine. See which will work best in your situation. Let me know how it works out. Always looking for what works.

Blessings!

David, What are the qualifications of a pastor? I read a lot about qualifications for elders (Titus/Timothy) but none for pastors. They seem to be giftings as the Eph 4 passage tell us. Yet you seem to make no distinction between pastors and elders? Paul called the "elders of the church" in Ephesus to meet him on the beach NOT the "pastors of the churches" ( Acts 20)

Is there anyway we will l ever see this in our lifetimes? "elders of the church"...

Blessings. Jeff

Hi Dave - I trained with you in Durban and now am working with Scott and Becky. I am struggling with something that I hope you can help with. Paul preached Christ where ever he went, to Jews and Gentiles. He preached Christ crucified, died and risen, our union with Him in that ( Romans 6) and the outcome - Christ in us(Colossians 1:27) - our life, our righteousness - the blessing of Abraham upon us. Paul preached a gospel of grace, grace that saves, grace that establishes, grace that teaches us to deny ungodliness and to live holy lives ( Titus 2:11), grace that inspires obedience to the faith - Romans 1:5 - So here's the question: in South Africa we live in a Christianized nations but most don't understand the gospel - most preach a performance based Christianity - should we not start with Christ's finished work of redemption rather than the Discovering God set of scriptures? Though there is great wealth in them they already have a basic knowledge of God but understand so little about this great salvation? Sorry for the long build up to the question :) - blessings and thanks - Darryl Mather-Pike

blessings on your work. Becky and I just were really impacted by our short training time in Dallas last year. Such a God-thing, that a dozen co-workers and friends were able to attend the training then in Durban, South Africa earlier this year.
Now, we've joined together and are discipling/planting in the black townships in northeast South Africa near the Mozambique/Swaziland border.
Thanks for all you do, we so appreciate your ministry.

I appreciate your explanation, and it gives me much to chew on... without condemnation. For years I've said I am a pastor/teacher, but frankly I think your words and the Word make me realize I probably am more cut out for the lost, but am just now conditioned to liking to hear myself talk/preach/teach. Man, but isn't that a stronghold in our theological landscape... at least in mine.
Now, let's see how that affects my tomorrow.
Keep up the good work, all His best in impact and health in Rwanda.
Blessings from the townships of NE South Africa,

I really appreciate, and generally agree with, your perspective. I also am most impressed with your capacity to translate the Word's application back into our Western Church Culture without any rancor or hardness, but still sharp and firm and direct.
I think most of us are so used to working around the fringe of the lost culture, trying to plant and foster hunger and growth with people who have been innoculated by exposure to a weakened strain of Gospel-life. We just grow vaguely satisfied with any sign of life. Lost expectancy yield lower faith, effort, and Kingdom perspective. Before we know it the parables begin to sound downright confusing; we've not gone afield for so long we forgot what good soil looks like. We just don't like messing with the weeds.
